Dynamic Inflatable Light Tower (DILT)
Dynamic Inflatable Light Tower (DILT) is a concept where air-inflated tube imbedded with RGB LEDs can move -dance- in two axis’s to achieve a harmonic movement. First axis being vertical tilt and second axis continuous rotation. DILT to be controlled in two ways: 1. Individually or grouped with a special app using Bluetooth mesh network, 2. Using the standard DMX512 communication protocol to be usable with other light effects. DILT to be used in shows, theatres, advertisement, and more.
The challenge in this device was the high vibrations due to the flexible nature of the air inflated balloon and the high cantilever loads when tilting the tower. A mass-spring-damper model was established and carful calculations and simulations along with the vibration suppression algorithm resolved the vibration issues. Regarding the loads, a springs system was implemented to reduce the loads on the vertical axis servo motor and gearbox, the springs system reduced the loads by 70% at max angle. The device was designed for reliability to operate outdoor for days in GCC environment.
